A Small Healthy-Cat Study Measured Urine Chemistry — Not Treatment Outcomes
Cat urinary supplements are widely marketed, but the evidence behind them is often thinner than the labels suggest. A new paper in Frontiers in Veterinary Science tested one herbal product in a tightly controlled lab setting, but it did not ask whether the supplement treats cats with urinary disease or prevents future flare-ups.
Instead, the researchers ran a randomized, double-masked crossover study in seven healthy castrated male cats aged 10 months to 5 years. Each cat received the supplement and a placebo for two weeks per treatment period, separated by a five-day washout. One cat was excluded after an incomplete urine collection, so the final analysis included six cats.
The outcome measures were urinary physiology and relative supersaturation — lab-based markers related to crystal formation risk — rather than symptom relief, stone passage, or obstruction prevention in cats with active disease. The paper also did not report a direct adverse-event or long-term safety assessment, so it cannot establish comprehensive safety.
Why Cat Owners Still Care About This Kind of Study
Urinary problems in cats can be serious, especially in males. Signs may include straining to urinate, frequent trips to the litter box, blood in the urine, or vocalizing while trying to urinate. If a cat is straining and producing little or no urine, seek emergency veterinary care immediately because a blockage can become life-threatening very quickly.
That urgency helps explain why owners may look for supplements. But before trusting marketing claims, it helps to ask what the study actually measured: a change in a urine-risk marker is not the same as proving fewer urinary episodes or better recovery in real patients.
What the Researchers Found
Among the six analyzed cats, struvite relative supersaturation was lower when the cats received the supplement instead of placebo (p=0.04). Phosphorus excretion was also lower with the supplement.
Most of the other measured outcomes did not significantly differ between treatments. That included:
- urine volume
- urine pH
- most measured urinary analytes
- calcium-oxalate relative supersaturation measures
So the study suggests the supplement changed some urinary physiology, but not most of the measured variables.
What the Study Does Not Show
This was not a treatment trial in cats with feline lower urinary tract disease. The cats were healthy, the study was very small, and the endpoints were surrogate lab markers rather than clinical outcomes.
That means the paper did not show that the supplement:
- treats urinary disease
- prevents urinary blockage
- prevents stones or crystals in real-world patients
- helps symptomatic cats feel better
At most, it showed that in a short experiment involving healthy cats, one urinary risk marker for struvite crystallization was lower during supplement administration.
What to Ask Your Veterinarian
If your cat has urinary signs, talk with your veterinarian before starting a supplement. Your vet can:
- check for emergencies such as obstruction
- look for causes that need specific treatment
- explain whether a supplement makes sense as a vet-directed add-on
- recommend treatments with stronger evidence in cats who actually have urinary disease
Supplements should not replace diagnosis and treatment, especially when a male cat is straining, crying in the litter box, or unable to urinate.
Study Limitations and Disclosures
This study has important limitations:
- only seven cats were enrolled and only six were analyzed
- the cats were young, healthy, castrated males, not a broad clinical population
- each treatment period lasted only two weeks, with a five-day washout
- one cat was excluded because urine collection was incomplete, and the paper notes other urine collection may also have been incomplete
- the main positive finding involved a surrogate risk marker, not a direct clinical outcome like fewer stones, less pain, or fewer urinary emergencies
- the authors wrote that the product was reportedly safe and that extended safety studies are needed, so this paper should not be read as establishing safety

This very small study in healthy male cats found lower struvite relative supersaturation and lower phosphorus excretion with an herbal supplement, while most other urine measurements did not significantly differ from placebo.
