El Niño Drought Linked to Lower Worm Prevalence in Stray Dogs and Cats
An observational study in southern Thailand linked a 14-month El Niño drought to lower soil-transmitted helminth prevalence in untreated stray animals: hookworm decreased in drought-affected cats and dogs, strongyloidiasis and toxocariasis were eliminated in dogs, and prevalence was unchanged in unaffected wet-soil cats.

- After a 14-month El Niño drought in southern Thailand, hookworm prevalence decreased in drought-affected stray cats and in stray dogs, while prevalence in cats from an unaffected wet-soil area stayed unchanged.
- In drought-affected cats, strongyloidiasis was unchanged in 2016 but lower by 2020 versus 2014, while toxocariasis did not change.
- In study area 2 stray dogs, strongyloidiasis and toxocariasis were eliminated after the drought, and Spirometra spp. prevalence remained unchanged (as it did in unaffected-area cats).
